A walk-in closet's layout matters more than its square footage. The same room can feel cramped or spacious depending on how the storage is arranged. Here are four approaches we design around most often.
Single-wall layout
All storage runs along one wall, leaving the rest of the room open. This works well for narrow walk-ins or rooms that do double duty as a dressing area.
U-shaped layout
Storage wraps three walls, which maximizes capacity in a square or rectangular room. This is the most common layout for mid-size walk-ins, since it balances a lot of storage with a comfortable amount of open floor space.
Island layout
In larger walk-ins, a center island adds drawer storage, a folding surface, and often a spot to sit while you get dressed. It works best when the room is wide enough to walk comfortably around it on all sides.
Mixing storage types within any layout
Whatever the floor plan, the best walk-ins mix hanging sections, shelving and drawers rather than leaning on just one. We design the mix around what you actually own — more hanging for a wardrobe heavy on dresses and suits, more drawers and folded storage for a more casual one.
