A small closet feels small because most of its space is wasted, not because there isn't enough of it. A few layout changes can make a reach-in closet function like one twice its size.
Use the full height
Most closets only use the middle third of their height — one rod, one shelf, and empty space above and below. Adding a second, shorter hanging section underneath for folded items like pants or skirts, and shelving up to the ceiling for off-season storage, puts the whole wall to work.
Double-hang where you can
Shirts, folded pants and skirts don't need full-height hanging space. Splitting one tall hanging section into two shorter ones roughly doubles how much you can hang in the same width.
Drawers beat bins on a shelf
A stack of bins on a shelf is hard to see into and awkward to reach. Built-in drawers use the same footprint more efficiently and keep smaller items — socks, accessories, folded basics — visible and easy to grab.
Light it properly
A small closet with no light source is hard to use well no matter how it's organized. Even a simple built-in LED strip makes it much easier to actually see what you own.
