A lot of closet companies you'll find searching online are franchises — a local sales office operating under a national brand name, with the actual manufacturing happening somewhere else entirely. That's not necessarily a bad option, but it's worth understanding the difference before you sign anything.

Who actually builds it

With many franchises, the salesperson who visits your home isn't connected to the shop that manufactures your closet. At Millcraft, the same family-owned company designs and builds every piece in our own shop in Suffield, Connecticut.

Who actually installs it

Installation is often subcontracted out, which means the person putting your closet together may have had no part in designing or building it. We install everything ourselves, with our own crew — the same people accountable for the build are the ones responsible for how it goes in.

Accountability when something needs adjusting

If a measurement is off or a piece needs a fix, it's much simpler to resolve when design, manufacturing and installation all sit with one local team, rather than being split across a sales office, a distant factory and a subcontractor.

What to ask any closet company before you hire them

  • Where is this actually built, and by whom?
  • Who installs it — your own crew, or a subcontractor?
  • If something's wrong after installation, who do I call?

Those three questions tell you a lot about what you're actually buying, no matter which company you're talking to.
